What is care for the elderly?
Care for the elderly involves dedicated support for an older person who wishes to continue living in their own home. It may involve housekeeping services, cooking meals, personal care, domiciliary care, mobility support, administering medication or simply companionship and support getting out and about.
Elderly care can be offered through regular home visits, during day or night. A carefully selected live-in carer can also be arranged, providing the extra reassurance that someone is always there to support and help you or your elderly relatives live independently.
Especially for someone living with dementia, this extra support within the home environment can be invaluable in maintaining routines and living with a good degree of independence.
How do you provide elderly live in care at home?
Like with all quality care, a special focus on independence is essential when supporting an older person at home. Rather than taking over on tasks, your dedicated visiting or live in carer will help to enable you in your daily routines and what you want to get out of life.
If you are prone to falls or need support with your mobility, your carer will help to reduce any trip hazards around the home. You’ll also have the peace of mind that someone is there to support if there is an accident or sudden emergency.
Your carer will be carefully matched to you. They will be someone who you feel most comfortable with and build up an easy rapport. You may find them to be a good source of emotional support and a trusted companion. Our carers are also trained to use assistive technology, such as personal alarms and home adaptations.
In home senior care
Often used to describe care given to an elderly individual, senior care can involve anything from a short visit in the morning to helping you make a cup of tea at breakfast. Senior care also extends to more thorough support, such as help with showering and washing, getting dressed or spotting trip hazards in order to prevent falls.
Senior care visits can be repeated throughout the day to ensure that the individual has everything they need to feel comfortable in their own home, safe in the knowledge that there is always someone they can rely on.
Live-in care is another suitable option for elderly parents or individuals who require more constant support or have difficulty with a progressive condition such as dementia. According to The Lancet Public Health, the number of adults aged 85 and over needing round-the-clock care in England will almost double over the next 20 years.
For many, a residential care home is a daunting prospect and isn’t a viable option, particularly if you live in a couple or have pets to look after. Having someone there to support you as and when you need it provides peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
Dementia is one of the fastest growing conditions in the UK that affects the over 65s and is often the most popular condition people associate with the elderly. According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, over 850,000 are estimated to be living with dementia with this rising to one million by 2025.
As a dementia care specialist, Helping Hands are committed to providing a friendly face and supporting those with the condition to live independently within their own homes.
Elderly live in care
Live in care for the elderly is the new standard of elderly support and staying safe at home for an individual elderly person or couple.
Personal caring for the elderly can involve:
- Housekeeping support, including laundry, vacuuming and cleaning
- Preparing and cooking meals to your tastes
- Personal care, including support with bathing, dressing and washing or drying your hair
- Medication support, whether it is administering or providing prompts
- Continence care, including changing pads, help with toileting or stoma/catheter care
- Supporting your mobility, whether it is using hoists or assistance around the home
- Running errands such as collecting food shopping or prescriptions
- Companionship and enabling you to enjoy your hobbies and interests
If you or a loved one needs support with a condition, such as living with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or life after a stroke, a specialist carer can provide this tailored support.
Services for the elderly at home
Home care comes in a range of shapes and sizes. With many flexible options, you can choose the level of support you need for when you need it most.
Regular home visits, at set times of the day or night, are available if you need that support little and often. The visits can be from as little as half an hour each week and right through to several hours a day. Overnight support is available in the form of waking nights and sleeping nights too.
If you prefer ongoing support, then live-in care may be the best option. Your live-in carer will be there 24/7, living in a spare room in your house and offering assistance when it’s needed. He or she is likely to become a great companion or friend. Read more about what live in care covers here.
Home care is also available on a temporary basis. Called respite care, it can offer a much-needed rest for an existing caregiver. You can also arrange short-term support after an operation or accident, enabling you to return home and get back on your feet at your own pace.
We are here to help when you need us
Why choose daily care?
Around-the-clock care allows your loved one to remain in his or her home, while ensuring safety and promoting optimal well-being. In addition, caregivers offer a much more personalized plan of care with one-to-one support tailored to the status, conditions, preferences, hobbies and lifestyle of the individual.

There are many different types of home care for the elderly that all focus on helping people who can no longer carry out all the normal activities of daily living by themselves. These include respite care, live-in care, nursing care and overnight care.
Elderly care, also referred to as senior care, is a specialised care service that is designed to meet the needs and requirements of senior citizens at various stages. Because of this, elderly care is an umbrella term that encompasses everything from assisted living and nursing care to home care and live-in care.
The term ‘elderly’ often refers to an individual with a chronological age of 65 years old or older.
As the body ages, it becomes more vulnerable to medical conditions and it is more difficult to do things we once used to. Ageing cannot be prevented, but we can better manage health conditions for our loved ones. Common health concerns for the elderly include memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, amongst others.
Our comprehensive prices for support from an expert live-in carer start from £1,460 per week for a single person and £1,700 per week for a couple.
When you arrange elderly care, we will get to know your hobbies and interests. In knowing you personally, we will match you with a compatible carer that is likely to become a close friend over time.
